The current fourth years’ class of BSc. Food Science and Technology made a successful technical visit to Deepa Industries Limited at the Nairobi’s Industrial area on 20th February 2015. The Industrial visit was organized by their lecturer, Dr. George Abong’ in order to facilitate practical learning and application as far as processing of root and tuber crops as well as utilization of oil for processing is concerned. The department was also represented by two technicians, Jacinta Muchiri and James Ouma. On arrival, the team was received by the Industry’s marketing and Product Development teams led by Wendy and Raksha, respectively.
Deepa Industries pride itself as a major snacks processor in Kenya. The main products being processed by Deepa which have a brand name of Tropical heat include potato crisps, spices, peanuts, popcorns and fried peas among others. The company has had a close relationship with the University of Nairobi through the Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Technology and were very instrumental in provision of research facilities of Dr. Abong’.
