The Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Technology has been offering the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Human Nutrition by research and thesis since 1990s.  Candidates choose their research topics in any of the specialized areas of nutrition assessment, clinical management of nutritional diseases, interventions for reducing nutritional disorders, food safety, and therapeutic/supplementary foods, dietetics, among other topical areas.

The University of Nairobi has been offering the Master of Science in Food Science and Technology since 1984. This programme has become competitive as evidenced by the increased intake of students. The candidates of this course are mainly drawn from learning institutions, the food industry, regulatory authorities and Non-Governmental Organizations that serve the general public. The MSc.

Advanced training and research in nutrition is necessary to address upcoming challenges and emerging issues in nutrition and health. There is an increasing demand for training in applied nutrition over the years. The M.Sc. programme is designed to help the trainees understand malnutrition, its consequences and methods of alleviating nutritional problems. The programme will, therefore, build capacity for the improvement of nutritional policy making in Kenya and other developing countries in African and other regions.
