Prof. Linus Opara from the University of Stellenbosch delivered key address in the virtual webinar that was held on October 7, 2020. He challenged attendees to look forward and gear towards improvement of food security. He indicated that the pandemic has exposed a lot of things and that we also need to think of food sovereignty apart form nutrition and food security. He lamented on the current practice of promoting small holder farmers instead of transformative large scall farming-this hasn’t worked for the last 50 years and will never work to assure food and nutrition security. We must harness our post-harvest technologies to ensure minimal loss to our crops and food.

- Teaching and learning: prepare students with thought leadership in agriculture
- Develop curricula that reflect current issues.
- Research from the University must be linked to solving current problems in our set up.
- Raise students with strategic thought leadership-recognize path but not afraid to chat new path.
