KARURUMO VALUE ADDITION FOLLOW UP TRAINING, FEBRUARY 19, 2020

The University of Nairobi through the Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Technology (DFSNT) and the Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection (PSCP) made a follow up visit and training to Karurumo farmers group in Embu to emphasize on a number of key requirements for value addition of mangoes and other fruits and vegetables.

MASII FARMERS GROUP VALUE ADDITION FOLLOW UP TRAINING, FEBRUARY 17, 2020

The University of Nairobi through the visited and trained Masii Horticultural farmers group in Masii on key requirements of product development and value addition of mangoes and other fruits and vegetables. The training focused on the hygienic handling and practices required during processing, actual processing of fruits and vegetables into consumable products such as pulp, nectar, dried crisps and leather as well as storage of processed products.

TRAINING OF KITUI MANGO FARMERS GROUP ON MANGO PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND VALUE ADDITION

The University of Nairobi through the Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Technology (DFSNT) and the Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection (PSCP) in conjunction with Purdue University and support from Rockefeller Foundation conducted a training on key requirements for value addition of mangoes and other fruits and vegetables.

VIRTUAL FRUITS AND VEGETABLES FOR ALL SEASONS (FRUVASE) WORKSHOP

Fruits and vegetables for all seasons (FRUVASE) Project workshop opened on 29th September and runs up to 1st October 2020. Being hosted by Kenya, the consortium of researchers includes institutions from Makerere University in Uganda, University of Nairobi and University of Eldoret in Kenya, Nelson Mandela African University of Science and Technology in Tanzania, Georg-August University in Germany. The workshop was graced by County ministers, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, Principal CAVS and officially opened by Prof. M Ogot (DVC, RIE).

IAFP Announces 2020 Student Travel Scholarship Recipients

Mr. Duke Gekonge Omayio , a Phd student and a part-time Lecturer from the Department of Food Science, Nutrition, and Technology is among the 20 international student travel grant awardees to attend this years’ International Association of Food Protection (IAFP) Conference in Cleaveland, Ohio - United States of America. Mr. Gekonge is undertaking a Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology under the Fruits and Vegetables for all Seasons project (FruVaSe, 2018-2021)  The Department congratulates him for this achievement and wishes him all the best.

MANGO PROCESSING TRAINING

The University of Nairobi through the SAP project established a food processing hub at the Department of Food Science and Technology fully equipped with small scale mango processing equipment and machines. The facility serves as a training centre on mango value addition to students, farmer groups, youths and interested micro small and medium enterprises interested on mango value addition.
